Dussehra 2025, also known as Vijayadashami, falls on October 12. It marks the victory of Lord Rama over the ten-headed demon king Ravana. Massive effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghanada are burnt across North India. In the south, it marks the culmination of Navratri celebrations.

Significance

Dussehra symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and dharma over adharma. 'Dasha-Hara' means the defeat of the ten-headed Ravana. It is also the day Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura.

Rituals & Traditions

  • Burning effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghanada
  • Performing Ram Leela plays depicting the Ramayana
  • Worshipping weapons, tools, and vehicles (Shastra Puja)
  • Exchanging Shami leaves as a sign of goodwill
  • Starting new learning or ventures (Vidyarambham in South India)
